<text>This work is a collection of sheet music for 100 Hungarian songs and includes the text in the original Hungarian with translations in German and English. Desiderius Demény is listed as the composer. Elisabeth Lockwood and Adalbert Heidelberg contributed the English and German translations, respectively.

According to Barbara Lange in The Power of Discountinuity in Hungary Gypsy Nóta, “magyar nóta is a type of nineteenth century Hungarian popular song (Lange, 519).” This suggests that the songs within this book are not specifically from a gypsy or Roma origin, but instead stem from this traditional Hungarian music. However, it is possible that various Roma groups throughout Hungary could have sung any number of these songs in some context.

It is also interesting to note that the composer or compiler of these 100 songs, Demény, does not come up in any research, save for when he is mentioned as a student of Victor von Herzfeld (Pfitzinger, 237). Herzfeld was a violinist and composer that studied in both Vienna and Berlin before moving to Budapest to become a professor of music theory and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music (Csando). It is here that one can assume he became the mentor of Desiderius Demêny, who would later come to compile this work.

<text>A Bouquet of Hungarian Songs is a selection of Hungarian folk music compiled into a book of musical scores. The collection is 20 pages long with 16 traditional songs from various artists, including the sheet music as well as English, Hungarian, and German translations. The work can also be found under the other titles: Ungarischer Liederstrauss mit ungarischen, deutschen und englischen worten Magyar Nótacsokor. A Bouquet of Hungarian Songs was published under joint copy right to Bárd Ferenc És Fia & Nádor Kálmán in 1939 Budapest, Hungary. 1939 marks the start of the deadliest conflict in human history, World War II. During World War II Hungary was a member of the Axis Powers and suffered a large number of solider and civilian deaths. This was also a period there both Jews and Roma people faced discrimination and later deportation/ extermination throughout Hungary and much of Eastern Europe. The publication of “A Bouquet of Hungarian Songs” during this time shows that while Roma people faced extreme racism, their culture and music was still widely enjoyed and consumed by the same groups they faced discrimination from.

<text>The song book, Gypsy Memories, is compiled with songs as played by Harry Horlick and his A&P Gypsies. Born in Kiev, Russia Horlick was a violinist who performed in various venues until he was drafted into the Russian army during WWI. When he was freed from the war, Horlick moved to New York and began performing in cafes with a small six piece ensemble. Horlick’s group began to be sponsored by the A&P food store chain after its radio debut in the early ‘20s. A&P agreed to fund the band’s weekly radio show, leading to the creation and success of The A&P Gypsies. Horlick’s group hosted the most popular instrumental music program on air from 1924 to the 1930s, specializing in Gypsy music Horlick learned while traveling around eastern Europe. Sources categorize the group’s music in many ways including classical, semi-classical, folk and gypsy-inspired genres. The inconsistency in how the group’s music is categorized was most likely an intentional tool used by Horlick to boost his music’s popularity. Ethnomusicologist, Barbara Lange explains that maintaining a flexible public image is a fundamental tool Rom use in the U.S to cross ethnic boundaries and increase popularity. The group’s use of “impression management” allowed them to create a vague yet unique sound, which was favored by ethnically mixed audiences throughout the US. </text>
